The largest city on the US-Mexico border, it sits at the foot of Mount Franklin (elevation 3,762 feet [1,147 meters]) below the small valley where the Rio Grande rises from the foothills of the Rockies.
The intelligence site was identified in 1598 by Juan de Oñate, a New Mexico colonist, who called it El Paso del Norte (Spanish: "Passage of the North"). The Franciscans founded Mission Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe there in 1659; the first church stands in the center of the area of Juárez.
