According to court records, one of the "triggers" carried a Glock pistol equipped with an automatic trigger, a small thimble-sized device that turned his semi-automatic weapon into a machine gun capable of firing 20 rounds per second. Around 8:00 p.m., the team drove across town to Palm Tree Street. A moment later, in one of the backyards, they opened fire on a crowd. Bullets splashed into the crowd, killing four and wounding six.

But the house was not a den of rival gangs; Police later determined that a family had gathered there to watch football together. Six members of the Mongolian Boys Association were arrested for their alleged involvement in the mass shooting. Three face the death penalty.

An automatic rack - the most common automatic conversion device - turns a semi-automatic pistol into a weapon capable of emptying an entire magazine with a single pull of the trigger. Also known as switches or chips, machine guns have been around since the 1970s, but are very difficult to legally purchase in the United States, where machine guns cannot be legally owned without a special license. In recent years, these small metal or plastic devices have exploded in popularity on the black market and gained some traction among criminals and anti-government extremists. Last year, members of the Boogaloo Boys, an accelerationist movement hoping to spark a second civil war, used Sears-equipped guns to attack a federal courthouse.
An investigation by The Trace and VICE News found that federal lawsuits involving automatic conversion devices have increased in recent years. From 2017 to 2021, the number of cases increased from 10 to 83, according to our exclusive nationwide analysis of court filings. We found over 260 cases filed over the past five years, including robbery, assault and murder, with over 1,000 devices recovered. The government has not collected this data in the past, and the true number of illegally converted machine guns on the streets is likely much higher.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the federal agency responsible for policing US guns, said it seized 1,500 modified Sears assault rifles in 2021, a staggering increase from 2020, when only 300 were found.
"Car pots are everywhere on the street now," said Jeffrey Busch, a 21-year ATF veteran who now serves as special agent in charge of the Dallas Field Division. "They're one of the scariest things we've dealt with since I became an agent."
The rise of the automatic sear has been driven by its availability and ease of use. The U.S. market is largely supplied by China, where manufacturers sell the devices on sites such as Alibaba and Wish.com directly to consumers, law enforcement officials said. Automasks are often advertised as airsoft parts or tools and shipped with false documentation and packaging labels. They can also be created with a 3D printer. Once in a person's hands, installation can take just a few seconds and requires little technical knowledge or tools.
"It's that simple," said Rick Vasquez, former director of the ATF's firearms technology division. "The information is out there, and the knowledge to do it is out there."

Conversion devices can be installed in many types of handguns or rifles, but are especially common for Glock pistols. This is due to the internal design of the Glock, which makes it easy to access and replace parts. A Glock spokesman did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
In September, a Houston man opened fire with a modified Glock pistol after officers showed up at his front door to arrest him on a drug warrant. One officer was killed and another wounded. Four months later, a convicted felon wielding a converted Glock wounded three more police officers in a daylight shooting in Houston. The suspect managed to escape, but police arrested him later that day at his home, where they also found a cache of weapons, machine gun components and a 3D printer.
For gang members, an auto benchmark is a new accessory and perk that can deal incredible damage and intimidate enemies, especially when paired with high-capacity magazines. An ATF agent in California, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak for the agency, said that in his first decade on the job he rarely encountered machine guns; Now he sees converted guns with automatic sights "all the time." Some criminals, the agent added, have been caught with the devices on ghost guns — untraceable weapons that can be manufactured at home or obtained without a background check.
For nearly 90 years, the federal government has waged an aggressive campaign to shrink the stock of automatic weapons available to the public.

In 1934, after several high-profile crimes involving machine guns, Congress passed the National Firearms Act, which required anyone who owned a fully automatic weapon to register it with the government and pay a tax of $200, equivalent to about $4,000 today. This has greatly increased the cost and difficulty of owning one.
Industrious arms looked for solutions. In the 1970s, conversion devices began to appear in niche gun communities, but the public rarely sought them out. Obtaining an assault rifle became more difficult in 1981, when the ATF ruled that owning one was the same, in legal terms, as owning a machine gun, regardless of whether the device was mounted on a firearm or not. Operating an ATM without the proper federal license, which requires an extensive background check and expensive fees, can result in a 10-year federal prison sentence.

Five years later, Congress passed the Firearms Owners Protection Act, which banned the import or manufacture of any new automatic weapons in the United States.

The 1986 law created an extremely limited pool of legal machine guns, and the weapon now commands sky-high prices. Even base models can cost $10,000 online. More desirable weapons, like World War II machine guns, can run into six figures.
But acquiring an illegal machine gun is no longer that expensive or logistically challenging. Over the past five years, advances in low-cost manufacturing tools such as 3D printers, plus global commerce on the Internet, have combined to create a massive black market of machine gun manufacturers, dealers and illegal traders. With automatic firing, anyone willing to break the law can actually make a machine gun for just $20.
Selling automatic grills has also been popularized by YouTubers and Instagrammers, whose device demonstrations have received millions of views.
"People don't sell drugs, for the most part, off the dark web — they're not on Instagram selling crack cocaine or powder cocaine, but they're selling guns there now," said Busch, the ATF agent in Dallas.

Bushek said the widespread availability of automatic bars has created an arms race on the streets, and his Texas department is inundated with cases -- including murders and robberies -- involving the devices.
At the Ohio home of a self-described Inzel accused last July of plotting a massacre of fraternity members, sheriff's deputies discovered a modified Glock submachine gun that had been stuffed into a heater hatch. In May 2021, federal agents in Florida seized two machine guns converted from a convicted felon linked to the murder of a 20-year-old mother.

In Denver, when undercover ATF agents told gun dealers they needed help putting together a drug cartel that was "going to war" with their enemies, the black gun dealers quickly obliged. During a five-month investigation in 2018, dealers working at an auto repair shop demonstrated their custom firearms to agents, showing them how to install and use a Sears automatic and other automatic conversion devices. One dealer touted the units as "fast as hell," achieving brutal rates of fire that surprised him. They sold the agents a Glock pistol and five AR-15-style ghost rifles. All weapons have been changed to machine guns. "We go for everything with a full car," the traders said.
