Influenced by his cousin who enlisted in the U.S. Marines, Rudy Toner, a junior at Shawnee High School in Medford decided he wanted to enroll in the JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) program at Cherokee High School - so he transferred and is now full. Swing Cherokee.
Extreme Military Camp
This past summer, Rudy found the "Extreme Military Challenge" program in Battleground, Alabama, which exposes youth between the ages of 13-18 to the rigors and realities of basic Army training. In a day when high school youth are distracted by smartphones, social media and video games, this organization strives to expose young men and women to learn and experience leadership skills that reach into all areas of their lives.

Rudy asked his parents if he could attend, and after looking at the schedule, it was a no-brainer. Located just north of Birmingham, Alabama, Rudy thrived in the camp environment, making friendships and learning leadership skills. During most of his time at the camp, Rudy was chosen as the team leader most of the time there. A typical day starts at 05.30 (5:30 in the morning) and ends at 22.00 (22:00).

The days are filled with marching drills, shooting ranges, leadership lessons, obstacle courses, abseiling walls, and various classroom activities that teach American history, military history, and more. The summer session ends with a formal graduation where the family is invited to witness a "little change" as they watch their little one march in formation and experience firsthand the lifelong friendships made in recent weeks.
Rudy recently attended a five-day Army camp held at the "Cadet Staff Ride" in Washington D.C. They attended the opening ceremony of the Association for the U.S. Army (AUSA), visited the Pentagon, visited the U.S. National Museum. Marines, Lincoln Memorial. , at Arlington Cemetery and had the honor of participating in the laying of flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

As a parent of a 22-year-old and three teenagers, it is a constant challenge to find positive influences for your children to learn from, to eliminate such negativity as is often seen in the news and on television. We hope this experience will make Rudy aim higher and help him better understand our nation's history and culture. All in all, I have no doubt that these experiences will make him a better person and citizen of this great nation.

XMC is a division of Maryland-based Liberty Communications LLC, and both the organization and the program are led by President/Col. Joseph Land Sr. Liberty Communications provides leadership development and career services as well as other organizational support services to service members, veterans and government agencies.
Boot Camp Obstacle Course
XMC offers team building programs for corporate teams, but its main focus is military-style leadership development for youth ages 13-18. Its staff, many of whom are military or ex-military, describe their offerings as "the most challenging and realistic military training programs available to cadets. Perfect for a young person interested in experiencing - firsthand - the military lifestyle ." Their stated goal is to "provide young people with authentic exposure to work in the same way, empowering them to make informed decisions about their future."
Land explained the XMC program and its participants: "XMC is a program to evaluate the activities of young people aged 13 to 18: good kids, without crime, without drugs and with the ability to do well in school. Authenticity, quality institutions, level of skill staff – everything we do is as genuine and as high quality as we can offer. There's nothing else like it."
XMC may sound like an ROTC program, and many cadets come to camp; but this program is open to any young person who wants a little adventure and an opportunity to explore and improve themselves. Its training offerings include aspects of basic military training, arts, wilderness survival, agility, physical fitness, teamwork and team leadership. Advanced programs even provide students with SCUBA certifications and pilot license credits.
XMC is currently conducting its Cadet Tactical Skills Training winter course at Camp Liberty. with a small group of 20 experienced cadets and trainers, the week-long program keeps its participants outdoors constantly, demonstrating medical and life skills as well as combat simulations. Cadets learn about common injuries in winter environments and build fires and shelters as they watch their available tools dwindle each day. At the end of the course, cadets must be able to shelter and warm themselves without the modern equipment available.

Great military challenge! Military Summer Camp (XMC) is a premier program of its kind that offers realistic and safe military camps for youth. Although most of our participants have a serious interest in a possible career in the military, we have many who participate for a unique experience that will help improve themselves, whether it be their motivation, leadership skills, confidence, behavior or general fitness. XMC is NOT a disciplinary camp and we do NOT accept participants with behavioral issues (see FAQ). Unlike most programs, we have not done anything about this legislation.
